Penrith & Oakhill Game Report - 3rd June 2007

The mountain men from Penrith arrived at Chatswood at 1.30 pm and promptly requested a beer. When told that they were just chilled, not cold, they said, “that’s fine, we just need a drink!”

Gordon players arrived (a total of 19) and the game got under way. Brad Horan spent more time warming up that he did on the field because of a head clash in the first tackle with team mate Matt Fowler. Brad left the field to have his head attended to by a “professional “nurse and looked like Fozzy Bear when she had finished with him. Brad was conspicuous by his absence during the presentations, leaving early to avoid being recipient of the Mug’s Mug!

When asked to referee, Matt said” I don’t remember playing and it looks like there are too many players on the field (seeing double) . Thanks Matt.

Needless to say, in Brad's absence, the honour of receiving the Mug's Mug went to Matt

The Oakhill boys arrived in force and as usual, the majority of their players had to have been under age as they are so slick. Oakhill being a new team to the golden oldies had no red or purple shorts for their team, however, Gordon, under strength due to previous injuries were strong and gave a grand display of courage to end the game 17 all. ANOTHER DRAW!!

The three teams combined into two barbarian sides for a further 20 minutes which was great fun as it was difficult to know who was on which team, but created great camaraderie.

The regular meat raffle was run by Brittany Prowse and her friends. Thanks girls.

Brittany then drew out her dad’s ticket to win the raffle. So, of course we all know that Brittany rigged the raffle!!

Overall, it was a great day with lots of fun friendship and fraternity on the day. What better way to end it than having a couple of virgins slugging it out in a chug-a-lug. Welcome to Golden Oldies Boys!

Lindfield & Wahroongah - 20th May 2007

Gordon have been playing both clubs for over 10 years and always have had great matches, as was the case on 20th May.

Although both clubs know it is a draw at the end of the match, it was played with great vigour. Gordon, of course, coming on top with no blood spilt. Only one injury was recorded, that being sprained ankle.

Brett Holden, being beaten on the wing had to turn and chase catching his opponent metres from the try line and putting him into touch. Great chase Brett, welcome back. They, of course, celebrated their on field rivalry with the traditional chug-a-lug which saw Brett just pip his opposing number again.

Barry Carr took great pleasure in awarding Karl Houghton the Mug's Mug for being lifted and put on his back by an opposing player half his size.

Various awards were handed out and received from all teams and the days ended with Lindfield & Wahroonga inviting us to play at their home ground next year.

Collaroy & Engadine Game Report - 22nd April 2007

CLick to View Larger VersionCollaroy & Engadine made the trip to Chatswood on Sunday 22nd April for a game played in sunshine and light rain that caused a lot of greasy ball action loved by all the old forwards. Access to the ground was made difficult by the rail works closing Albert Street, these works were apparently being managed by a Collaroy player who was obviously trying to put us off our game by causing as much disruption as possible. We are proud to say he failed miserably and the day proceeded as planned. Of course the inability to leave the ground meant we had to stay around a bit longer and enjoy a few more quiet ales after the game.

We were privileged to have the President of Gordon Rugby, David Bezer, officiate the game for us. David's handling of the game was exemplary, taking a "firm but fair" approach that saw Barry Carr sent to the sidelines for blowing up at one of his decisions.

Click to View Larger VersionCollaroy & Engadine combined to form a team and loaned us a couple of players to even things up. There were tries a plenty on both sides in a topsy turvy game made even more interesting by the rain. Thankfully the rain stopped for the post game celebrations and BBQ.

Awards were handed out during the post match BBQ with Barry Carr receiving the "Mugs Mug" for is on field verbal performance with Brett Holden receiving the players award from Collaroy. We thought it only fitting that we present the Collaroy winger, who played for us, with the Stags Player award as he did run in a few tries for us and stopped a few from his "former" team mates.

Warringah Game Report - 15th April 2007 Click to View Larger Version

Another great game of Rugby played in the sunshine at Chatswood as we lined up against the Warringah Wrinkled Rats.

Due to a referee not being arranged for the match, just whose job is that?, Bob Lollback, Matt Prowse and Karl Houghton took turns at controlling the game with some fairly loose, some would say strange, interpretations of the rules. I suppose that went hand in hand with the referees outfit worn to perfection by Matt Prowse.

There was some great action on the field played in great spirit and both sides running in plenty of tries to add to the enjoyment. The after game festivities were great with both sides enjoying the BBQ and the beers made possible by the assistance of John Finch, Roger Denne & Bob's wife, Lynn. Bob's sister and brother-in-law also stopped in on their 'round Australia trip to lend a hand.

Thanks guys, the day wouldn't have been as good without your help.

At the presentations Mark Cummins was presented with the "Mugs Mug" for his fine effort of leaving his wallet at home on the Canberra trip, leaving his team mates to pick up the tab for him.

Eastwood Game Report - 7th April 2007

The Eastwood Rugby club had a very special day to celebrate 60 years since their first game in the competition, which was against Gordon, and also 50 years since the first televised game against Gordon. On the Saturday 7th April 2007, Eastwood also played Gordon, which was very appropriate.

The Gordon Golden Oldies played Eastwood Charcoals after the main match which was watched by thousands and captured with great gusto by the ABC television cameras. The game was played in great spirit, even though most of it was in the rain. However, in typical Golden Oldies fashion, the ball handling was something to be seen, and when tries were scored, the huge crowd went wild.

The celebrations continued on in the change sheds and then in to the club house. Two presentations of medals were made for the Personality Players for Gordon. The forwards was won by Bill Banham and the backs by Bob Lollback.

Eastwood Gala day is still to come and is one not to be missed !!

ACT Game Report - 31st March 2007

For our usual first game of the season a group of Stags made the trip down the Hume Highway to the ACT to play in the annual April Fools Day Tournament hosted by ACT Veterans Rugby at The Royal Military College, Duntroon. The grounds, as usual, were spectacular and some great rugby was played in glorious Canberra sunshine.

Teaming up with the Vincentia Van Gones we played multiple games against a variety of teams. Most notable are the young fit guys from RMC and the Defence Academy who, thanks to the hybrid Veterans/Oldies Laws, made spectators of us as they lifted in the lineouts.

The greatest complement was paid to us by the RMC scrum half at the half time break when, after peppering our line for a good 5 minutes without being able to penetrate, we caught him counting numbers. "Surely those old guys couldn't keep us out without having extra players on the field."

We were sure to assist him with the counting and remind him that, Obviously experience does count for something .... he won't do that again.
